How to Determine if Fiberglass Tape Has Aged

Based on the previously discussed material composition, properties, and lifespan of fiberglass tape, you can determine whether it has aged by observing the following:

 

Visual Inspection
Aged tape exhibits noticeable yellowing, brittleness, and surface cracking. The adhesive surface loses its original luster and may even show signs of localized powdering or flaking, while the edges are prone to curling and wrinkling.

 

Performance Testing
When gently pulled, aged tape loses its original toughness; it snaps easily under slight force, indicating a significant drop in tensile strength. Adhesion tests reveal a marked decline in tackiness-causing the tape to detach quickly-and, in some cases, adhesive residue may ooze out.

 

Professional Testing
You can refer to industry-standard patented methods by subjecting the tape to thermal shock testing at its glass transition temperature (Tg). If the tape detaches or breaks under the specified conditions, it indicates that it has reached the end of its service life and has completely failed due to aging.
