This crack repair tape consists of a woven fiberglass scrim coated with a pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive. We manufacture it for crack reinforcement and surface repair on building substrates including drywall, plaster, concrete, masonry, and cement render. The scrim provides tensile reinforcement across cracked sections, while the adhesive holds the tape in position during application of finishing compounds.

Once embedded in plaster, putty, mortar, or joint compound, the mesh functions as an integral reinforcing layer within the repair, not as a surface patch. It bridges existing cracks and distributes localized stresses that would otherwise cause the repair to fail after curing.

The crack repair tape is suitable for both interior and exterior applications, provided the finishing system is compatible with fiberglass reinforcement.

Working Principle

Position the tape over the crack or damaged section with the adhesive side against the substrate. Apply repair material through the mesh openings until the scrim is fully encapsulated.

 

After the compound cures, the reinforcement and repair material form a composite section. The mesh restricts stress concentration along the original crack line and maintains continuity across the repaired interface. The open scrim construction also provides mechanical keying between the repair compound and the underlying substrate, which contributes to long-term adhesion.

We weave the scrim from E-glass or alkali-resistant fiberglass yarns, using a plain or leno weave pattern. The construction provides consistent tensile properties and dimensional stability across the tape width.

A polymer coating is applied to the fiberglass yarns to protect them against alkaline attack from cementitious and plaster-based repair materials. This treatment preserves the mechanical performance of the mesh over the service life of the repair.

The pressure-sensitive adhesive is acrylic-based and functions as a temporary fixing aid during installation. It holds the tape in place without staples or additional fixatives. The adhesive is not intended to contribute structural bond strength after the compound has cured.

The open weave allows repair compounds to flow through the scrim and fully encapsulate the glass reinforcement. This produces a continuous reinforced layer with good adhesion to the substrate. Mesh opening size and yarn count are balanced to achieve adequate compound penetration while maintaining reinforcement efficiency. In practice, finer meshes provide higher tensile strength, while more open weaves enable faster material flow and improved mechanical interlocking.

The woven construction provides tensile strength in both machine and cross-machine directions. When the repair system undergoes stress from thermal movement, hygroscopic expansion, or structural settlement, the mesh distributes that stress across a broader area rather than allowing it to concentrate along the crack line. In our in-house testing, reinforced repairs consistently exhibited higher crack resistance than unreinforced repairs under cyclic loading.

Because the fiberglass reinforcement is inherently moisture-resistant and biologically inert, the crack repair tape performs reliably under normal interior and exterior service conditions. It maintains dimensional stability across a broad temperature range and does not support fungal or bacterial growth.

The alkali-resistant coating extends service life when the tape is used with cement-based or plaster systems, where pH can exceed 12. This coating allows the reinforcement to retain tensile properties and remain effective throughout the expected life of the repair.

The crack repair tape is compatible with gypsum-based joint compounds, polymer-modified mortars, cementitious repair materials, and most standard plaster and filler products. We recommend confirming compatibility with the specific compound before full-scale application, particularly with fast-setting or high-shrinkage formulations. In practice, compound viscosity is the primary variable affecting wet-out and embedment quality-thinner compounds penetrate the mesh more readily, while heavier compounds require more working time to achieve full encapsulation.

Installation should be carried out over dry, clean, and dust-free surfaces. For heavily contaminated or highly porous substrates, priming may improve adhesive contact and compound adhesion.

Shelf life under proper storage conditions-cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight-is 12 months from the date of production.
