Material Description

Wall Joint Reinforcement Tape is manufactured from woven fiberglass scrim coated on one side with a pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive. It is used to reinforce joints between gypsum boards, strengthen transitions between different construction materials and improve crack resistance in drywall finishing systems.

 

The adhesive layer keeps the tape in position during installation, allowing finishing compounds to be applied directly over the mesh. Once the compound hardens, the fiberglass reinforcement becomes part of the joint rather than remaining as a separate facing material.

 

The product is suitable for gypsum board, plaster, cement board and similar interior wall systems where dimensional stability across joints is required.

The reinforcing scrim is woven from E-glass fiberglass yarns in either a plain or leno construction. The mesh remains stable during handling while providing sufficient openings for joint compounds to penetrate completely.

An alkali-resistant polymer treatment protects the glass fibres when the wall joint reinforcement tape is embedded in gypsum- or cement-based materials. This protection becomes particularly important in alkaline environments, where untreated glass reinforcement gradually loses strength over time.

A pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive is applied to one side of the scrim. Its purpose is simply to secure the wall joint reinforcement tape during installation. Once the joint compound has cured, the reinforcement is carried by the fiberglass mesh and the surrounding compound rather than by the adhesive itself.

Joint Reinforcement

After application, joint compound passes through the mesh openings and surrounds the fiberglass yarns. The cured compound and reinforcement work together as a continuous layer across the joint.

 

Instead of allowing movement to concentrate directly over the seam, the reinforcement spreads tensile stresses into the surrounding compound. This reduces the possibility of visible cracking where gypsum boards meet.

 

Joint performance depends not only on the tape itself but also on correct embedment. Complete encapsulation of the mesh generally produces the most uniform reinforcement and surface finish.

The woven construction provides reinforcement in both longitudinal and transverse directions while maintaining dimensional stability during installation.

Fiberglass does not absorb moisture and remains biologically inert under normal indoor service conditions. The reinforcement therefore does not promote mould growth or dimensional change caused by humidity.

Where cement-based materials are used, the alkali-resistant coating helps preserve the tensile properties of the glass fibres throughout the service life of the joint system.

Application performance is influenced by the consistency of the compound. Lower-viscosity materials usually penetrate the mesh more easily, while heavier compounds may require additional pressure during embedding to achieve full contact with the reinforcement.
