Product Description

Fiberglass Surface Mat is a woven reinforcement produced from continuous glass fiber rovings. The fabric is manufactured in a balanced plain weave and supplied as white rolls in standard widths, with custom cutting available where required.

 

The material is intended for use as a surface reinforcement layer in FRP laminates. During lamination, the open fabric structure allows resin to penetrate evenly and helps form a resin-rich surface layer. This reduces fibre print-through and improves the appearance of the finished laminate, particularly in corrosion-resistant composite equipment.

 

Material Construction

Continuous untwisted glass rovings are woven in both warp and weft directions to obtain a stable and uniform mesh structure. Consistent yarn spacing across the fabric allows predictable handling during cutting, positioning and lamination.

 

The open weave promotes rapid wet-out with common thermosetting resins. Once the laminate has cured, the reinforcement becomes part of the composite rather than a separate surface layer. It improves dimensional stability while adding very little thickness.

 

Load transfer within the laminate is more evenly distributed through the woven structure. In service, this helps reduce local stress concentrations, especially around joints, corners and other geometries where cracking is more likely to initiate.

 

Resin Compatibility

The fiberglass surface mat can be processed with a wide range of thermosetting resin systems, including:

  • Vinyl ester resins
  • Orthophthalic polyester resins

  • Isophthalic polyester resins

  • Epoxy resin systems

Laminate quality depends largely on resin selection and complete fibre impregnation. Resin content should be adjusted according to the fabric weight, laminate design and manufacturing process. Trial laminates are generally recommended whenever new resin formulations or processing conditions are introduced.

Mechanical Characteristics

The balanced weave provides similar reinforcement in both warp and weft directions, helping maintain uniform mechanical behaviour throughout the laminate.

 

The fabric remains sufficiently flexible to conform to moderate curves without disturbing fibre alignment. During fabrication it tolerates trimming, secondary bonding and routine handling while maintaining structural continuity.

 

When incorporated into a laminate, the woven reinforcement distributes applied loads over a broader area. This contributes to improved resistance to local cracking around openings, flanges and areas subjected to repeated mechanical or thermal loading.

 

Chemical Resistance

The fiberglass surface mats are developed for applications where improved chemical resistance is required compared with conventional E-glass reinforcement.

 

The material performs well in contact with moisture, alkaline environments, salts and many industrial process chemicals. It is therefore widely specified for FRP equipment used in chemical processing, wastewater treatment and marine applications.

 

Service temperature depends on the selected resin system and operating environment. For chemically aggressive media or elevated temperatures, compatibility should always be evaluated using the complete laminate construction rather than the reinforcement alone.

 

Processing

The fiberglass surface mat adapts readily to curved mould surfaces and components with varying geometries. It is suitable for hand lay-up production, repair laminates and local reinforcement work.

 

Its stable woven structure allows accurate positioning during lay-up with minimal distortion. Proper storage in a clean, dry environment away from direct sunlight helps maintain product quality prior to processing.
